About Rio Butterflies

Want to know more about Rio Butterflies? For over 35 years, we’ve specialised in the setting and framing of real butterflies, moths and insects. All of our products use real, end of life specimens (insects which have died naturally). None of our frames use species which are rare or endangered. We follow strict adherence to CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) guidelines.

Our real insect and butterfly frames are 100% hand made. From our workshop in Essex, we use traditional methods to prepare our specimens. We also make every frame we use by hand. Even the typewriter we use to add the name of each specimen underneath it is the same one we started out with all those years ago.

Our business began with a market stall in Covent Garden, London. Today, you will still find us there! If you would prefer to see our products in person, you can find us inside Jubilee Market Hall. We often have exclusive pieces and frames which are not available online due to their size or the butterflies, moths or insects they contain. Please note, we are only there at weekends, as the market changes and offers different themes such as antiques and collectables during the week.

Whilst often referred to as butterfly taxidermy, the actual terminology is butterfly relaxing. This refers to the process of softening specimens after they have died, so they can be manipulated and mounted before framing.

We’re an independent, family-run business. Thanks for taking the time to find out more about Rio Butterflies – please feel free to contact us.
