Description

The stelenes butterfly has large wings. Our real framed stelenes examples show the underside, which is light brown and olive green in colour. In contrast, the upper side of the butterfly’s wings are black and trimmed with brilliant green or yellowy-green patternation. Please note, the upper side of this butterfly is not visible in our frames.

Commonly referred to as part of the brush-footed butterfly family, or four-footed butterflies, they are known to stand on only four legs while the other two are curled up. In some species, these forelegs have a brush-like set of hairs. This is what gives this family its common name.

Adults stelenes butterflies feed on flower nectar, rotting fruit, dead animals and bat dung. The larvae which is produced are horned, spiny, black caterpillars with red markings. During the pupa stage, this changes to a greeny colour and they grow sharp, gold spines to protect themselves from predators.

Adult stelenes butterflies have varied wingspans ranging between 85 and 100 mm (3.3 and 3.9 in).

Our framed stelenes butterfly specimens have been sourced responsibly. Find out more about where we source our butterflies and moths from.
