A real Blue Morpho butterfly set and mounted in a 10×8 inch wooden frame, approximately 1 inch deep. 

The Blue Morpho butterfly is one of the most identifiable in the world, with its bright blue, iridescent wings that are edged with black. The Blue Morpho is one of the largest butterfly species in the world. They are commonly found in Brazil, Mexico, Central America, northern South America, Paraguay and Trinidad. Please note – the lower parts of these butterflies bodies are removed as they secrete an oily residue which can deteriorate the wings over time.

Description

The Blue Morpho’s vivid, iridescent blue coloring is a result of microscopic scales on their wings. It is these scales that reflect light. In contrast, the underside of the morpho’s wings is a dull brown color. This is mainly for camouflage and protection against predators.

When Blue Morphos fly, the contrasting upper and underside of the wings make it appear as though the butterfly is appearing and disappearing. This is another form of protection it can use against birds and bigger insects.

The Morpho family of butterflies comprises 29 accepted species of Neotropical butterflies and has around 147 accepted subspecies. From egg to adult butterfly, Blue Morphos live on average for 115 days.

Adult Blue Morpho butterflies have wingspans ranging between 3-8inches (7.5–20 cm).

How to display

This frame comes with a single brass hanging hook which can be screwed into the rear of the frame, allowing you to hang it on a wall.

Alternatively, the frame is deep enough to stand freely by itself on a shelf.
Where to display

To preserve the colours of your specimen, it's best not to display your frame in direct sunlight. You should also avoid areas of high moisture, such as bathrooms and kitchens.
About our frames

All of our frames are handmade and feature mitred joints. The hardwood we use is of a very dark brown colour, with visible woodgrain.
