Description
Nicknamed the Leprieur’s glory, the Callithea butterfly belongs to the Nymphalidae family. They are characterised by their metallic blue/green undersides which are marked with black spots and red or orange markings. The “Lerieur” part of their name is in honour of François Mathias René Leprieur – a French pharmacist and naturalist.
The upper surface of the Callithea’s wings are black with metallic green areas. Both wings exhibit a deep blue sheen. The species is found in rainforest habitats at altitudes between sea level and 1000 meters, typically east of the Andes.
Adult Callithea butterflies have wingspans ranging between 50 and 60mm.
