Description
The Prola butterfly is one of the smaller butterflies in our collection. Our frames display the underside of the wings, which exhibit bright red hindwings without markings. These butterflies can be seen in the early morning, resting on tree trunks with their heads pointing downwards and their wings flattened against the bark of the tree.
As the day progresses, they descend to settle on riverbanks and rocks. Once settled on the ground for a few minutes they become very reluctant to move and remain basking until dusk, even during light showers or drizzle. However, if danger is detected, males will respond by fanning their wings to display the bright red underside. This act spreads across other males in the group, so that the whole group quickly becomes alerted to the danger and is ready to fly up into the trees to escape.
Adult Prola butterflies have typical wingspans ranging between 2.5 to 2.9 inches (6.5 to 7.5cm).
Our framed Prola butterfly specimens have been sourced responsibly. Find out more about where we source our butterflies and moths from.
