Description

Our framed sarpedon butterfly examples showcase their natural beauty. With contrasting black and green wings, this species is identifiable by a greeny-blue triangle on the top side of its wings. This central spot of colour points towards the butterflies body.

Sarpedon butterflies can be found in low-level rain forests where it is nice and moist. As a result, they can usually be seen flying just above the top of the tree canopy. The larvae of the sarpedon feed on trees such as the cinnamon tree. In eastern Australia, they have evolved to survive in drier subtropical environments.

The males are known for their habit of feeding by the edges of puddles, often at the roadside. Occasionally, as many as eight will be seen at the same puddle. They have also been known to be attracted to animal droppings, carcasses and rotting insects.

The common bluebottle is known for fast flight and is quick to change directions.

Adult sarpedon butterflies have varied wingspans ranging between 55 and 75 mm.

Our framed sarpedon butterfly specimens have been sourced responsibly. Find out more about where we source our butterflies and moths from.
